OVERVIEW

The Port Moresby Institute of Matriculation Studies (PIMS) is nationally founded and private secondary educational institution which was first established in Port Moresby Papua New Guinea in 1996, and the prime motivating factor that led to its establishment was to provide alternate and second–chance opportunities to school leaver ‘dropouts’ who have been pushed out of the mainstream education system to continue and complete their formal or non – formal secondary Education. By giving such students these second-chance opportunities, many have done well and gone on either to direct employment or higher levels of studies at various colleges and universities (including overseas). As a result of their later success, many of these students who have passed through this avenue at PIMS are now living fulfilling and meaningful lives benefitting their families, society and country.

The Education challenge in PNG is a daunting, serious and urgent one.  There is a huge gap in terms of the number of students leaving school and those accepted into higher and further education. Recent statistics show that out of the 75 000 school leavers who leave school each year only 15 – 20% are accepted into higher learning institutions. The rest become drop-outs or ‘push-outs’ who are left ill-prepared and disillusioned. The PIMS is proud to be playing it’s to address this education challenge and ultimately contributing to the future development of the country.

Our Guiding Statement is : "Using the most effective methods, be at the forefront of providing quality, relevant and sustainable educational services to as many of our citizens as possible for the betterment of themselves, their society and country". This guiding statement is in alignment with the PNG Government's 40 Year Development Plan (2010 – 2050) known as the Vision 2050 and will be the guiding vision of our institute into the future.

As of 2012 the PIMS will have 8 centers throughout PNG servicing several thousand students each year. These centers are Port Moresby NCD, Lae, Madang, Wewak, Rabaul, Kavieng, Manus and Wabag. Furthermore, most of the secondary programs that we offer are offered both on fulltime class contact as well as distance or correspondence studies. The correspondence studies are most useful for remote as well as working students.

To improve our operational and service delivery efficiency, we have developed an excellent student enrollment computer database system that, among other things, can keep 'finger-tip' track of important student data such as Personal Details, Registration, Centre/Class Listings, Fee Statements, Outstanding Fees, Assignment Due Date and Reporting Schedules, Enrollment Statistics and others. In the immediate future, we plan to have all our centers throughout the country connect remotely to our central database server for instant data input and information retrieval. As well we plan to put courses on-line for internet access by students.
